Today, amidst partially restored gardens and ancient stone walls, visitors can feel the echo of a bygone era.

FORTRESS SUTVRAC

Feast your eyes on the enchanting Elaphite Islands, the rugged Dubrovnik coast, and the serene Rijeka Dubrovacka hills. It's not just a fortress—it's a gateway to breathtaking landscapes.
Named after a revered saint known for healing, Sutvrac embodies hope and protection, safeguarding not only the people of Lopud but their stories. Explore its architectural marvels and imagine the vibrant life it shielded within its sturdy walls until its disarmament in the 19th century.
Whether you’re a history buff, a nature seeker, or a photography enthusiast, Fortress Sutvrac promises an unforgettable experience. Unlock the island's secrets, step into the past, and let Sutvrac inspire your journey.

ST. NICHOLAS CHURCH

A sanctuary of resilience and heritage
Step back in time and uncover the rich history of St. Nicholas Church, a Gothic-Renaissance treasure on Lopud Island. Originally dedicated to St. Vincent, this church was founded in 1482 by Nikola Zamanja during the devastating plague epidemic of 1481-83. It became a beacon of hope and refuge for monks fleeing Dubrovnik during outbreaks. By the time the foundation stone was laid, the dedication shifted to St. Nicholas, reflecting the islanders' deep reverence for this saint.
Admire the single-nave design crowned by a 30-meter-high bell tower, added in later years. Above the entrance, a stunning rosette with acanthus leaves catches the eye, offering a glimpse of the craftsmanship of its era. Inside, the 16th-century altarpiece—linked to the local master Kristofor Antunović—stands as a testament to the island's cultural and economic prosperity through seafaring.

Notable artworks include:
A wooden statue of St. Nicholas.
Two preserved depictions: The Baptism of Christ and St. George slaying the serpent. St. Nicholas Church was part of a Dominican monastery, renowned as both a spiritual sanctuary and an intellectual hub. The Dominican Order, rooted in study and preaching, established schools that enriched the community. The monastery in Lopud once housed a primary school and grammar classes, playing a vital role in education and social life.
Despite destruction from the 1667 earthquake, St. Nicholas Church endured, though the monastery became private property. A second earthquake in 1979 inflicted further damage, yet the spirit of the community prevailed. The church was restored in 1994, with ongoing conservation efforts led by international teams from Cologne, Antwerpen, and Dubrovnik.
Discover St. Nicholas Church and its enduring legacy—a must-visit destination for history buffs, art lovers, and those seeking inspiration.

Đorđić-Mayneri Park

A Venetian Legacy in Lopud
Hidden on the enchanting island of Lopud lies the Đorđić-Mayneri Park, a serene haven steeped in history and beauty. Established by Venetian baron Augusto Mayneri, this magnificent garden spans an impressive 13,000 square meters, making it the second-largest park in the region. Divided into two sections by a charming drywall, it invites visitors to step into a world where nature and artistry blend together.
Enter the park through a unique arch adorned with eashells and blue Murano glass, a tribute to the baron’s Venetian roots. Located near the remains of the historic Grand Hotel, this entryway sets the tone for a journey filled with beauty and nostalgia.
Stroll along geometric pathways, once lined with fragrant citrus groves, olive trees, and towering palms—some of which still provide lush shade today. Imagine the garden as it once flourished, a vibrant testament to the baron’s vision. Stone stairways, guarded by regal stone lions, lead to hidden corners where paths wind among rock-edged planting beds and weathered sculptures.
Perfect for a leisurely afternoon, the park offers refreshing shade and a tranquil atmosphere. Though parts of the garden are still being restored, its untamed charm and historical allure make it an unforgettable experience.
