Dubrovnik

Famous for its beautiful surrounding city walls, Dubrovnik is Croatia’s southernmost city, protected from the Bora wind by Mount Srd and from the Scirocco storms by the island of Lokrum.

Dubrovnik is one of the most prominent tourist destination in Croatia and a regular stop for all the major cruiser liners sailing the Mediterranean sea.

The area is covered by flourishing Mediterranean shrubberies, numerous gardens and arboretums, orange and lemon, groves together with tropical and subtropical plants brought, over the centuries, by sailors returning from their voyages.

The city walls, built, extended and reinforced over the centuries, are Dubrovnik’s main feature.

They encircle the entire old city, including the port and you can walk around the entire perimeter.

They are 1940 metres long and its height reaches 25 metres in some points.

Along the perimeter there are 15 towers, built for defence in the fourteenth century. After the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks in 1453, the fortresses facing the hinterland were reinforced and new fortifications and ramparts were built in the front part, reaching the size we see today with the works completed in the sixteenth century.
